FILE SETUP BASICS
How to Prepare Print-Ready Files
Print files need to be built differently than web graphics. A file that looks good on screen may still have issues when printed. Before sending artwork, check the size, bleed, margins, resolution, color mode & file format.
If you are not sure whether your file is ready, send it to us for review before placing the order.
Final Size
Set your document to the correct finished size before exporting. For example, a standard business card is usually 3.5″ x 2″ before bleed is added.
Bleed
Most print files should include bleed. Bleed is extra artwork that extends past the trim edge so there are no white edges after cutting. A common bleed setup is 0.25″ on each side.
Safe Margin
Keep important text, logos & critical design elements away from the trim edge. A safe margin helps prevent important content from being cut off.
Resolution
For best print quality, images should usually be 300 DPI at final print size. Low-resolution images may look blurry, pixelated or soft when printed.
Color Mode
Print files are usually prepared in CMYK color mode. RGB files may shift in color when converted for print.
Fonts
Outline fonts or embed them when exporting your file. Missing fonts can cause text to change unexpectedly.
File Format
PDF is usually the best format for print-ready files. We may also accept AI, EPS, PSD, INDD, JPG, PNG or TIFF depending on the project.

COMMON PRINT SPECS
Recommended Printing Specs
Every print product may have its own requirements, but these general specs are a good starting point for most professional printing projects.
Business Cards
Common finished size: 3.5″ x 2″. Add 0.25″ bleed on all sides. Keep text, logos & important design elements inside the safe margin.
Flyers
Common sizes include 8.5″ x 11″, 5.5″ x 8.5″ & 4″ x 6″. Add 0.25″ bleed on all sides if the design reaches the edge. Use high-resolution images.
Postcards
Common sizes include 4″ x 6″, 5″ x 7″ & 6″ x 9″. Add 0.25″ bleed on all sides. Leave room for mailing area, postage & addressing if the piece will be mailed.
Brochures
Common sizes include 8.5″ x 11″ tri-fold, 11″ x 17″ bi-fold & custom folded layouts. Add 0.25″ bleed on all sides. Fold panels may not always be equal, so use the correct template.
Banners
Large format files should include enough bleed or extra background area for finishing, trimming or mounting. Avoid tiny text, low-resolution images & design elements too close to the edge.
Signs
Sign files should be reviewed based on material, size, viewing distance & installation needs. Some signs need extra margin for mounting, cutting, routing or finishing.
